Ask Ali: On the UAE: Language barriers crumble with time

What do you say after “hello” in the UAE? Breaking the ice can be a fine art, even among people from your own country. So getting to know people from another country, where English is not the first language, can be pretty hard. I’ve found that some of my acquaintances from western countries break the ice by poking fun at themselves, a trait they call being “self-effacing”. It’s good to be able to laugh at yourself, but actually confessing to being stupid in public? Call it machismo, call it pride, but somehow it just doesn’t gel with us Emiratis. So if you are looking for a way to break the ice, I suggest something simpler, like our favourite sports (football, falconry), cars, architecture (such as wind towers) or our musical instruments, such as the oud and Arabian drum. Or dates – the edible variety, I mean. These are things [...]

Why Preserving Ancestral Languages Is Key for Uplifting Immigrant American Communities

The first language through which I perceived the world was Hindi — the language of Northern India. As I entered kindergarten, I distinctly remember a classroom atmosphere of condescension towards my language. I’m sure that many other schools were different, but that was the tone in my school. As I spent more time in that environment, I slowly began to lose fluency in my own ancestral language. Hindi eventually became a memory stored in the back of my mind. Like so many other children of immigrants in America, English became the only language I could speak fluently. Language loss among immigrant cultures in the United states is a symptom of many forces operating together. Mass media, the education system, and employment requirements are all parts of the reason. However, I believe the root cause lies with the ugly legacy of centuries of colonialism. Many non-white peoples have been made [...]

Dallas-area students being taught Hindi

DALLAS (AP) — While many area schools have classes in Chinese and Arabic, Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD offers another Asian language that’s not often studied: Hindi. Plus, the district offers these languages not only in high school but starting in seventh grade. “We wanted to give the students two more years to set a strong foundation through high school,” said Bhavani Parpia , International Business Initiative coordinator. The Dallas Morning News reports the district became the first in the nation to implement the IBI with Hindi language instruction starting in seventh grade. In Texas, it’s also one of only a few public school districts to offer Chinese starting in seventh grade. “We’ve been lucky,” Parpia said. “We have a fantastic superintendent who sees the big picture. He gives me the OK to securing funding.” Gene Buinger has served as superintendent since 1999. He recently announced his retirement, which will be effective [...]

Obscure U.S. Army program proves popular road for immigrants to gain citizenship

Immigrants to the United States can get on the fast track to citizenship if they speak one of 44 languages the military has identified as essential. They can become citizens as soon as basic training, pictured, is over. (Photo courtesy of the U.S. Army.) The U.S. Army often needs people who speak a specific language in its ranks. Many of those people though, while living in the United States, aren’t U.S. citizens or permanent residents. That’s presented a problem for the Army, but one that an innovative program aims to solve. The U.S. Army in 2009 launched a yearlong program allowing immigrants with certain language skills or medical training to enlist in the military and receive citizenship by the end of basic training — basically in just 10 weeks. The program was a wild success, enticing nearly 1,000 people to join up, with thousands more on a wait list. [...]

Apps to Learn and Hear Hindi

In the flat-world of Thomas Friedman, we travel more these days, for business, pleasure, tourism, spiritual quest, etc. And landing in a foreign country (like India) where chaos and confusion rule the road, it becomes important for anyone to have that little edge, where IF they are able to read street signs, shop names, instruction booklets, product/item descriptions, it goes a long way completely depending on your host.
