I find it ironic that people should argue over the issue of language.

One party says “Mother-tongue begone.”, while another say “Mother-tongue stays.”

I think people need to realise that language can be a weapon. It can be a political weapon, it can be a cultural weapon and it can be a personal weapon (eg skills).

The fault lies not in the weapon, but in the people who uses the weapon.

Why should anyone give up learning extra languages? Why should anyone deny themselves extra weapons to equip themselves to face this ever challenging world?

I say, not only one must learn their mother-tongues… they should also find ways to learn more languages. To limit oneself to just one or two languages is to limit oneself skill-wise.

As for peace…well, peace works both ways. Takes two hands to clap. The minorities have, all these years, accepted Malay as the national language and despite which culture they come from, had embraced BM… even though BM is one of the least spoken languages of the world. The minority has extended their hand of peace and friendship this way….it is time the majority extend theirs as well… and with languages such as Mandarin, Hindi, French etc being the more sought after ones Internationally, I’d said, it is only logic and for the good of all, that ALL Malaysians (majorities included) start to learn extra languages.

Peace does not come from one party always trying to please another and another party always demanding more from the other party. That is suppression and it is no wonder people are starting to speak out nowdays. Band-aid solutions can only last that long and they will not solve the problem.

Peace only comes from both finding a compromise that both are happy with… a fair, middle-ground.
